As she walks to stand before the Taliban firing squad, her understanding of her life brings her spiritual peace as she discovers, for the first time, her own self worth.

The transformation of Mariam and Laila as they develop a loving mother-daughter relationship, their sacrifices for one another, their perseverance, and their acts of bravery under the harshest of conditions make them powerful Islamic heroines. Sharif brings news of Tariq from Pakistan. Tariq has been in a special unit of the hospital with Sharif and in an accident, lost his other leg and suffered serious injuries. Hearing this, Laila is devastated, but Sharif continues that Tariq spoke of his home and his family, but he mostly spoke of Laila.

Tariq had asked Sharif to find Laila and tell her that he was thinking of her. Sharif tells Laila that Tariq died soon after in the hospital, and Laila wonders if Tariq's death is her punishment for not properly mourning Ahmad and Noor. Rasheed begins speaking again at meals, addressing Laila and telling her lies to attempt to impress her.

Ultimately, Mariam figures out that Rasheed is courting Laila for marriage. Mariam objects profusely, but Rasheed does not care about her opinions or feelings. Rasheed threatens to Mariam that he will cast Laila out of his house if he does not ask her to marry him. Mariam asks Laila for her answer, and Laila says that she will marry Rasheed.

Rasheed tries to give Laila a wedding ring and flowers, but Laila says she just wants to get the wedding done with as soon as possible. Rasheed takes this as a sign of her eagerness to marry. Laila had once thought about leaving Afghanistan before she had heard the news about Tariq's death. Soon after, she realizes that she is pregnant and now cannot leave. Laila considers the unborn child to be a miracle - a memory of Tariq.

Across Kabul and in a galaxy far, far away… a girl named Laila is born on the same night that the Soviets take control of Afghanistan.

Her best friend and love interest is Tariq, a neighborhood boy who lost a leg when he was a child. With the war worsening, Tariq's family decides to leave for Pakistan, and he and Laila consummate their relationship the night before he leaves. Laila's family decides to leave soon after, but her parents are killed by a stray rocket as they're packing up the car. Rasheed and Mariam care for Laila as she recovers.

A man comes by and tells Laila that he saw Tariq die in a hospital. Rasheed, being the dirt ball that he is, uses this as an opportunity to ask Laila to marry him. Surprisingly, she says yes. It turns out that she's pregnant with Tariq's child. Her plan is to convince Rasheed that the child is his, and then escape to Pakistan after she's saved enough money. Mariam resents Laila at first, but she eventually becomes close to Laila and her new daughter, Aziza.
